Breast Lift Surgery:
What to Expect
Breast uplift, or mastopexy, surgery is designed to lift and reshape sagging breasts. Whether due to ageing, pregnancy, or weight loss, many women in Essex and surrounding areas seek this procedure to restore a youthful appearance.
The surgery removes excess skin, tightens the remaining tissue, and repositions the nipple higher on the breast. This can result in firmer, more aesthetically pleasing breasts. Mat Griffiths, an experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon, performs these procedures in Brentwood, Chelmsford, and Colchester, offering personalised consultations to understand your goals and expectations.
Post-surgery, you can expect improved breast contour and symmetry, boosting your confidence and satisfaction with your appearance. Our goal is to help you achieve natural-looking results that enhance your overall sense of well-being.

Breast & Areola Uplift (Mastopexy) Surgery in Essex
What Happens During Breast Uplift Surgery?
During mastopexy surgery, you’ll be under general anaesthesia. Mat Griffiths will remove excess skin and lift the areola and nipple to a higher position.
This involves making precise incisions, often resulting in an “anchor” shaped scar around the areola, down the breast, and along the crease. These scars typically fade over time, with proper care as advised by Mat Griffiths.
Most patients stay overnight for observation and recovery. This meticulous process ensures that your breasts are firmer and more youthful, with a natural look that complements your body.
Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve gathered the most common questions women ask about breast uplift surgery and put them together in one easy-to-read section.
By providing clear, straightforward answers, we aim to give you the information you need to feel confident and reassured before making any decisions about surgery.
This means less time searching for answers, more time focusing on your goals, and a smoother journey from first consultation to feeling confident in your results.
Are there risks associated with an areola lift?
Yes. As with any cosmetic surgery, there are potential risks and complications, both during and after the procedure. These may include bleeding, infection, reactions to anaesthesia, or allergic responses.
Mr. Griffiths will discuss these risks with you in detail and take every precaution to ensure your safety throughout the process.
Will breast uplift surgery leave a scar?
Yes, breast uplift surgery will leave some scarring, although the extent varies depending on how much the nipple needs to be repositioned and the amount of skin removed.
Typically, scars are placed around the areola and run vertically down to the breast crease, often forming an ‘anchor’ shape. Every effort is made to keep scars as neat and discreet as possible.
With proper aftercare, they typically fade within 6 to 12 months; however, the final appearance depends on your individual skin type and healing process.
How long does it take to recover from breast uplift or nipple lift surgery?
Recovery time varies from person to person, as everyone heals at a different pace. Generally, you should plan to take 2–3 weeks off work, depending on the physical demands of your job. For the first two weeks, avoid driving, sexual activity, or anything that could disrupt the healing process.
Light activities are usually possible after about two weeks, but strenuous exercise, such as gym workouts, should be avoided for at least six weeks. During this time, you’ll also need to wear a supportive bra to help your breasts settle into position.
Most patients can expect to return to their normal daily activities within approximately six weeks.
How long will I need to stay in the hospital after breast uplift surgery?
Breast uplift surgery typically lasts between two to three hours. In most cases, patients stay in the hospital overnight for monitoring and recovery.
Pain relief will be provided to keep you comfortable, and in some cases, a small drain may be placed to remove any excess blood or fluid. This is typically removed before you go home.
Is breast uplift surgery effective after weight loss or having children?
Yes. Significant weight loss or pregnancy can cause the breasts to droop due to stretched skin and a loss of volume, often leaving them looking deflated. Breast uplift surgery helps restore a more youthful shape by removing excess skin, lifting the breasts, and repositioning the nipples.
If you’d also like to increase fullness, the procedure can be combined with breast implants to both lift and add volume, depending on your individual goals.
Can I breastfeed after an areola lift?
Yes. An areola lift adjusts the position and size of the nipple but does not affect the glands or ducts responsible for producing and releasing breast milk.
This means your ability to breastfeed should not be impacted.
